ACDSee Pro is one of the few programs with a sound reference in the soundtrack menu (something I’ve never seen in other programs). It plays the classic Hans Zimmer piece “The Dark Knight,” which was somewhat creepy to listen to with the Darknight Sonata version of Symphony of the Night playing in the background. Overall it’s a good demo of the technology. ACDSee has a similar feel to ProSkin for the skin tones; after the preview pane turns green it’s time to see if you have a good result. I didn’t get the same results when going from my import settings to ACDSee’s color management, so I gave up on using ACDSee for cataloging RAW files. I also liked the contrast-enhancing adjustments. I still didn’t get every detail right, and it’s possible I may not have the proper camera settings. In the final two shots I’ve left it in Pro with My Colors and HSL. I tried Notifier Dark, and it was clearer, but didn’t have the redder skin tones. I may try downloading the Total Cleaner via the $0.99 Online upgrade when it becomes available.
I’m happy with ACDSee’s interface; I wasn’t really sure what to expect but it seems to be quite familiar, with the same look and feel of ACDSee Pro and Photo Studio. The interface is clunky as it doesn’t allow to group tools together in a menu, but it is easy to use. ACDSee only has a basic batch processor, but it can process an entire folder of RAW images if you tell it to. The previews in ACDSee 3 were much better than those in ACDSee 4; the only downside is that it doesn’t show the lens focal length. ACDSee 3 Free couldn’t create/open a catalog from its RAW files.
