I think my own experience is probably fairly typical. I upgraded from DD11 to DD12 two months ago and still am not aware that a large number of disks in my system are GPT. I used Windows to create disk partitions and rename the drives and partitions. The problem came after I installed Windows 10. I could only install DD12 trial because it only allows you to clone 1GB. The end-user version of Disk Director does not do that. So you can only clone up to 100MB.

My main drive is a 1 TB WD drive and I have an SATA to USB 3.0 enclosure. I’ve used Acronis before for the Windows backups and encryption and only a few hours ago I tried to back up the drive using Acronis since it’s been a while and wanted to see if it would work. I put the 1TB drive in the SATA to USB 3.0 enclosure and I set up a regular backup using the Acronis Setup program. It took about 1 hour for a full backup (using the whole drive). There were no warnings or errors except that once the backup was finished I had to uninstall Acronis. After about 2 hours I went into Acronis Setup and started up the clone function and it was taking a really long time. After waiting 2 1/2 hours I checked the status using the Sync status and it said Copying is 100% Completed. I also tried just the part that was finished (about 200 GB) using the Backup option and it only had enough space to clone about 700MB. Does anyone know what is going on here? I thought it took a full drive to clone a drive (and I have a 1 TB drive). Any help would be very much appreciated.

I have used Acronis only on Windows prior to this. I did have two drives that I would like to clone but they were not created using Acronis. I am simply going through the normal standard Windows way. Just a heads up for others not using Acronis but instead using Windows built in disk backup software for cloning.

I used to use Acronis Disk Director on both PC and Mac back in 2007 and 2008. It was a very reliable and fast way to backup and protect my data. I just recently came across Symantecs Ghost backup and restore function which is a much more powerful and reliable tool. Acronis has been on the slow side since about 2014 and started “supporting” it by adding or updating the features instead of fixing the problems. Now I know it is the end of the line for Acronis. I like that Symantec Ghost gives me the ability to make an image of a full drive in just a few steps. It allows me to backup and restore full drives, or just part of the drive and it is very fast and does not create a ton of junk or take up a ton of space when it is finished.
