The analysis time of Metashape’s RAW conversion becomes virtually immovable when files are extremely large (even double-sized images). For example, when working with RAW files of DLSR quality (12MP cameras with RAW processing software), even the Intel Core i7-5820K is unable to process them in reasonable time. When laying out projects, Metashape allows you to create projects both top-down and bottom-up. In top-down projects, the camera is positioned at the horizon, and the user must move the camera to create 3D models, often with a virtual marker. In bottom-up projects, the camera is moved to the end of a stack of photos, and the user will work from there to create a 3D model.

The alignment of photos and their associated depth maps is an important part of the workflow. If your photos have not been georeferenced, use the free U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Georeferencer utility to georeference your photos and prepare them for alignment. Once your photos are georeferenced, Metashape can align them for you or if you choose to have Metashape align photos for you, Metashape will take care of it.

As mentioned above, Agisoft Metashape uses open-source software. The software is licensed under the GNU GPL. While the term “open-source” may not be familiar to many, it simply means that there is no strong legal restriction on use or modification of the program. The main downside to using open-source programs is that the project itself has almost no resources to support it, meaning that the code must be supported by an active community.
