Of all the functions in the Security Center, this one was the most useful.

Backing up a PC to the cloud doesn’t have to be complicated. ESET makes it easy by letting you submit a file to Amazon Web Services, and connect your Amazon credentials to it. As with any cloud service, think about security carefully before using these features.

As an antivirus, ESET is no slouch. ESET found half a dozen known viruses, but not one of them was able to infect a Windows system. ESET found off-site malware that can be used to penetrate your computer. When you judge ESET’s components by this score, you can safely say that ESET NOD32 contains an adequate antimalware engine, an acceptable antispam component, and an effective firewall.

NOD32 is as good a name as any for ESET’s mainstream product. Smart Security Premium incorporates enough of its key features into a single, intuitive interface. You don’t have to learn a new setup process or alter your workflow. When you install ESET, you install the product, you create your account, and then you install the software.

After installing Smart Security Premium, click the My Account icon on the left side of the main window to get started. Click the button “We’ll generate a password.” Then, if you haven’t used ESET before, click “Recover my account.” ESET imports your account from an earlier version of the product.

While it’s no substitute for being armed with a solid understanding of security (particularly given the prodigious amount of malware we and AV-Test have spotted on the Play Store), ESET’s excellent Antivirus and Proactive Protection can offer an essential level of confidence online, particularly if you’re a regular user of the main Google services. You needn’t spend hours tweaking things to make the protection work for you, either, as ESET offers a series of quick-set recommendations in these areas.

We’ll start with Antivirus: here the basic settings do what you’d expect from a paid-for antivirus product, particularly as the standard protection level is on by default (allowing the app to scan apps and read your SMS messages). 

So, no, ESET doesn’t pop up every time you load an app or visit a website, but there’s certainly nothing to stop it doing so if you prefer. As for malware, the process is similar: it’s on all the time, and you can disable that completely, or set a maximum time limit and a maximum number of files it can scan.
