That’s because ESET’s “Malware”, “On-Access” (it’s been complaining about on-access for a long time now) and “Malware confirmed” detection methods all failed to spot it. (As in the pre-review test, ESET’s experts later confirmed that all NOD32 Antivirus’s known malware signatures were ineffective against this threat.)

Overall, we didn’t use ESET’s Sandbox Accelerator; but that’s because it would have been a very bad idea, since it would have lowered NOD32 Antivirus’s performance, and yes, we are all for sandboxes, or at least not blocking them altogether. In this case, it simply wouldn’t have helped.

Other antivirus vendors offer both free and paid antivirus services and are more versatile and powerful than ESET. They are generally less expensive than ESET and provide the basic antivirus protection that even ESET users need. However, on the other hand, free antivirus software requires no upgrades. ESET is not free: you have to pay $50 for the first year or $270 for the three years. Also, it is a little vulnerable to fraud in their use, as in other cases. ESET also has its pros and cons, some of which you can see in our ESET review. The company is experienced and can use it for many years, and it is quite easy to use. ESETs expert advice section offers numerous topics, from technical settings to common problems. This is an invaluable help and can sometimes save you a lot of time.

At the top of the scanning process, ESET now includes two virtualization systems: Avira Phantom V detects more than 250 types of malware, including the Trojan.LikeMaid, while Avast Phantom V cannot. ESET also incorporates smart scheduler, which can see that your system is in the middle of a scan and lower the AV engine.

However, there are still a lot of weak points. For instance, ESET cannot detect the Windows OS Ransomware. ESET has the same malware scan ability as most other antivirus solution, which is quite good, and can detect both Windows 10, 8, 7, and Vista.

There are many other programs that rank highly in ESET antivirus tests. However, they are rather difficult to use and inefficient for ordinary users. We can see why ESET antivirus scored so highly in our test. It is a good alternative if you are looking for a free antivirus solution.

We like that ESET takes a relatively simple approach to security. ESETs main window opens to a single tool bar, where youll find the same icons and text labels found on mobile devices. For the most part, the controls for the main security features are a simple four-line scrolling menu. You can show or hide the menu, view an item in more depth, or toggle the options on or off.

We found ESETs main screen to be easy to navigate, though we were a little slow to master the control of the two security functions listed in the toolbar. You can turn the browser extension off or on, and you can also lock the location bar, which can make for a little bit of a hassle when you need to log into a Web site while browsing.

The ESET icon is a simple light blue rectangle in the center of the browser. When you turn on the smart security feature for the browser extension, it instantly switches the light blue rectangle to a black circle. What appears to be a firewall icon when the black circle is on appears to be a timer icon when it’s off.

The instructions on the ESET Web site say that when you turn on the smart security feature, the real-time protection kicks in. It does. We found it to be a bit lax about blocking non-malware content, however, and it failed to accurately block phishing Web sites.

As you use a browser while using ESETs smart security, the IE and Firefox prompts requesting that you insert personal information appear briefly on the browser screen. This serves the dual purpose of protecting your personal data if the browser is hacked and blocking you from giving out that information in Web-based phishing attacks.

There is another gray bar near the bottom of the browser window, and it serves as a minidump to display any PC errors. For our tests, we turned on the firewall and smart security features, and the minidump never fired off a notification.

ESETs firewall rules are listed at the top of the browser window, and the rules for both Windows and Mac computers appear in one list. There is no way to set specific rules.

ESETs NOD32 (formerly named ESET NOD32 Antivirus) is a comprehensive antivirus program. In theory, its main component, NOD32, could be swapped with a different antivirus program. But ESETs new Smart Security suite, due in the second half of 2017, is designed specifically to take advantage of ESETs NOD32 antivirus, and the performance gain is dramatic. NOD32 has an antivirus engine, but it is not as advanced as ESETs, and ESET has acquired a better antivirus engine, one that ESET claims has up to 300 percent faster scanning. That means ESETs Smart Security can claim to scan 300 percent faster than the stand-alone antivirus. In practice, we saw no difference in performance.

One feature of NOD32 is its network security scanner (NSS). By default, it runs at night to scan your PCs and smartphones. The NSS can find threats in your home network or on the Internet. The program also scans (and restarts) your laptop as it sleeps. ESET claims NSS is particularly good at finding malware on laptops, saying it can detect threats even when a user has disabled the Windows Defender Real-Time Protection service. NOD32 can spot malware lurking on USB media, for example. These days, ESETs stand-alone antivirus can detect these viruses as well.

ESETs Smart Security not only helps protect the computers in your home, but also its smartphone, tablet, and internet-enabled TVs. Using ESETs Protection Device Manager (EDM), administrators can use granular control policies to limit the time your child spends on the internet and the applications they can use, with a word or phrase filter to screen images or videos.

In terms of the tools anti-malware abilities, ESET Smart Security New Version behaves as expected, quickly detecting and quarantining the three most prominent ransomware families (CryptoLocker, Cerber, and Locky). But the suite has a surprisingly weak phishing and spyware detection component.

The software, however, does a solid job at identifying and removing known malware that it picks up, including CryptoLocker as well as Cerber and Locky. ESET’s automated update mechanism is the best in the business.

Despite ESETs very capable safeguards, the software is known for its susceptibility to specific types of exploits, and ESET has indeed been hit by them. In addition, a case study from earlier this year found that the suite remained vulnerable to a live-over-malicious-Code (LOMC) attack. In my own tests, I found no evidence that ESET’s commercial antivirus system remains affected by LOMC.

You might argue that its limitations don’t matter, given the millions of installations ESET runs on. But let’s not forget, those infections are actually from users attempting to access legitimate websites.

Doing its best to emulate Norton products in the Mac world, ESET NOD32 now offers on-access scanning for Macs as well. I love that feature, as I dont have a Mac but I do like my personal data backed up.

Some of the NOD32 product lines, however, are more aggressively Mac-like in their Mac detection capabilities. ESET AntiVir Corporate Edition offers what it calls Real-Time. ESET AntiVir Personal Edition, which costs less, just offers on-access scanning.

Out of the box, Smart Security is very weak. For starters, it alerts you when a website is sending you to a phishing site. This is fine, but it doesn’t report that the phishing site contains malware. It’s a good thing that the web browsers built into your OS do a better job of detecting phishing sites, especially the browser of the OS you are installing Smart Security on.

When you download a file or open an email attachment, the program can tell you if the file is tainted. It can also warn you when an attachment contains an error, which often leads to a download. Smart Security issues an alert if the receiving program attempts to run what ESET calls “Nod32 suspicious behavior” files. Nod32 suspicious behavior files contain software such as backdoor Trojans or Trojans that connect back to the Trojan’s author. You can turn this off. You should.

The program can tell you when a malicious program is attempting to connect to your computer. ESET calls this behavior “remote access” and provides details about the program in the dialog that appears. But you should take care to disable this feature, because like many anti-virus utilities, ESET takes advantage of it to ping sites in your web browser. I also turned off Smart Security alerts on un-needed remote access connections. While ESET’s notification dialogs are minimally informative, at least they give you the option to turn off whatever you dont want.

In previous versions of Smart Security, ESET was always running in the background to watch your Mac and Kaspersky isn’t. To prevent this, you must manually turn off on-access scanning, a capability that other ESET products already offer.

With all of those features, ESETs capabilities can be intimidating to beginners. Fortunately, it makes a great first choice in any security-conscious PC. After I veg out a bit, I hope to take an in-depth look at how to implement each of those features, and what each component actually does. But first, we will start with the basic ESETs capabilities. The Password Manager also lets you store unused usernames and passwords for use in browsers and other web applications.

Smart Security gives you additional control over file access, allows you to specify which apps and users can access your data, and enhances the program with more advanced device and browser protection. I recommend you disable its automatic access control. The problem with this layer is that it limits what youre able to view on your Mac, and you need to be logged in via an existing, secure OS X account. It also blunts the effectiveness of your sandbox, enabling signed.exe in Safari to run.

Smart Security lets you set up various schedules for the program to check for new apps, new sites, unapproved apps or sites, and missed updates. You can specify the schedule for any or all of these checks, and you can specify a schedule even if youre not using Schedules. For example, if youre in the habit of always quitting Safari when youre done browsing, you can set your Schedules to run the check only after midnight so that your Macs secure boot isnt compromised by a signed app. This is useful for a variety of Mac apps, including antivirus apps.

Smart Security allows you to adjust app access settings to be more or less restrictive. You can prevent apps from reading files, writing files, run in the background, access the microphone, access the camera, access personal information, and access or download from the Mac App Store. You can also set an app to be installed instead of updated from the Mac App Store, and you can set a Mac to not allow apps to be opened. You can also prevent apps from connecting to the internet, or prevent them from accessing the Removable disk or network drives.

Smart Security protects your Mac from the settings and behaviors of potentially insecure third-party apps. In addition, the Program Preferences feature lets you set each file types preferred app for opening and saving files. This is useful for restricting access to specific types of files, such as pdfs or photos, or email attachments. For example, I can select that PDF files and text files are always opened with Adobe Reader; no other app can do that. This option is activated via your Macs security preferences.
