Bert Hautot and I have been working on a new content-aware filter. It is an image processing filter that understands what is in the image and sets the color of the rest of the image depending on what is already there. It can take one of many different filters, adjust brightness, contrast, and even set a base color for the image. We have also added much more filters, and thanks to the new shader interface in Krita, we can now add more filters with less work. We have been having a lot of fun working on this and we are now getting a lot of good feedback on our patches from the big Krita community.

One of the most requested Krita features was to be able to edit multiple images in one image editor. That’s why we’ve added ColorSync-support (previously this only worked for Photoshop and Lightroom), which allows Krita Lifetime Version to convert colors from the images to Krita’s color profile.

Currently, I am working on improving Krita for performance and stability. This includes, fixing more bugs in the resource system, adding some new features like keyframe interpolation, and fixing annoying bugs. I have also been working on a new paint tool. As usual, you can expect more updates soon, because it is the best thing since sliced bread. 🙂

With Krita 5.1 we have introduced a new Design Mode. A major part of the feature is to allow you to work on a Photoshop document, while you can still work in Krita (just no brush) and work on the layer. You can also now edit the tooltips in the design mode. This is a great way to collaborate on a Photoshop document without losing your brushes and layouts.

Last summer I have added a new features to Krita. A new “painter” mode has been added. This mode lets you open PSDs and change all parameters in the “composite” tool in Krita. You can now also edit the layer styles and even use clone stamp etc. This has opened up a new workflow for lots of workflows that has opened up new possibilities. In Krita 5.1 this tool is also called “Design Mode”. You can use Photoshop, Illustrator or any other PSD file to get your layer style, the smart object information or other data from your PSD file and then edit these in Krita. In Krita you can also change the Smart Arithmetic mode. This is something which we will add to Krita in the future, to make the tool even more powerful. Lastly, Krita now also offers full Blender support.

Obviously, there is a lot more that can be discussed in this monthly release. The development cycle for Krita is not linear, so we try to have a couple of minor releases every month. So every month, we will release a more substantial version of Krita with more new features and smaller glitches and issues fixed. The next release is already set for September 22nd. In Krita 5, we have improved the ability to correct/undo/redo using active layers.
