The only problem with Vuescan is that the smaller companies like ours, who use a lot less software and images, shouldnt have to pay for software we cant use, or for upgrades of one that is even more expensive than the software it replaced. I was just browsing the forums and came across this article. I have no problems with VueScan. I have been scanning film for around 10 years at this point, and have used SilverFast, PhotoScan, and Elements. VueScan is simply the best program I have ever used. Yes, it has options and it does a lot, but it also takes itself seriously and is a very very easy program to use.

The upgrade from the old Vue that comes with my Epson v450 to the new Vue that came with my Epson V500+ for color correction is excellent! The previous Vue was very buggy and did not have a lot of power. I had a patch for that buggy Vue from the old VueScan beta. But, my Vue’s color correction is an important function and I am thrilled with how it has improved.

First, I think most of us can recognize I wish there was better support for Digital ICE technology that comes with Epson software for dust removal. I do not recall VueScan or SilverFast had such a feature! I used SilverFast with Microtek Artixscan 120TF Scanner which did a good job but dust removal was a pain. I don’t do much of film or slide scanning these days but if did I would be happy with my Epson V500 Photo.

Our test image included 119 photos on a single page of the family home’s interior. It was scanned as both 100 and 150 dpi scans, for 1x, 3x, 5x and 8x resolution settings.
Also the image was scanned both in color and black-and-white. Most scanners aren’t smart enough to realize the difference and just do a plain ol’ color scan. Vuescan SE may not be. However, we use it for photos, so that’s nice.

Before scanning, we chose to calibrate the image with Vuescan. It managed to remove a yellow haze, but the red and green were way too much, the image appeared mottled with too much uniformity and the highlights were very bright.

Scanning color negatives and slides is great. We scanned our 4×5 on-the-go slide sheets from 4×5 to 8×10; again, Vuescan did a great job with the image, which was very uniform, very sharp and very bright.

We are replete with scanners, here is the list: Epson, Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Ricoh, Miele, Epson, Samsung, Konica Minolta, Brother, Mfc, Ilford, Ciel, Agfa, Polaroid, Fujifilm and more. I am a Vuescan customer for 12 years.
Epson has scanners of all formats, Kodak has all formats, Canon has all formats from 35mm to HD and even 7×12. It surprises me how incompetent some manufacturers are about updates. We have had to re-write software from scratch and even re-write how an older scanner (TC8800) works. Epson is a good one. Those who know scan technology and software, don’t use Epson. The funny thing is at one point Epson wrote their own software for each scanning system for their older and newer scanners.

Fine tuning of a good scan. Especially important for scans that fall short. Epson has a wonderful job creating a strong product with consumables and great customer support. Epson until my last Epson Scan when I upgraded to a S1500 from my Epson 400, I used VueScan and was always frustrated with Epson Scan.
I also don’t like the blacks. Epson uses a black having a depth of almost 4 microns. Fine grained blacks are great but I like blacks deep and not as fine grained.
In Vuescan you can tone down or tone up the blacks, of which I prefer to do the latter. But you cannot in Epson Scan. Also Vuescan can work with faded color slides. Epson Scan can’t. The Agfa slide which I converted using Vuescan to digital is almost perfect. I mean almost. The colors are still a bit off but otherwise perfect.
Vuescan is also a better choice for a borderless border. Epson Scan is also borderless but by default. You need to adjust the borders to get the best results. They don’t mean to lead the consumer to borders of borderless scans.

As the boxes of scanned negatives show, that’s a problem that couldn’t be corrected with the limited controls of the Kodak Scan. I couldn’t find a way to get an accurate color balance with the Kodak Scan, either, though the VueScan box of scanned negatives shows that the film type used for the scan is already well-calibrated.

What I like about VueScan is that it works well with a regular copy of Photoshop CS6 and will save the files in the native Photoshop PSD format. Compared with Epson’s driver software, you get fewer options but you get lots of features that make it easier to tweak the scans.
